Hi there, As we finally get to kick 2020 to the curb and reflect on the astonishing year that was, I can't help but also consider how grim a year it was for the media industry with 30,000 jobs lost, over 16,000 of which were newsroom jobs. This coupled with a shrinking progressive media landscape with the closure of outlets like Think Progress and Pacific Standard and others. DAME is one of only 11% of all media outlets owned and led by women, and in a world where only 37% of all media jobs are held by women, it's imperative we exist as a counterbalance to the rest of the media landscape. DAME does not sell advertising, we don't have venture capital backers. We've been able to survive, despite the headwinds, only because of the support of our readers. And remaining independent is critical for us. It's our mission to answer only to you. I'm so proud to have published some of the most insightful pieces about our current cultural and political moment in 2020. We were unafraid to call a lie a lie, call out rising authoritarianism, and covered critical stories from our most marginalized communities. From the impact of the border wall on Native lands to the hypocrisy of the GOP to disparities in women's health, we've shone a light on the biggest issues of our time. In 2021, with your support, we will continue to cover the impact of the pandemic on communities hurt most, launch deep dives into the climate crisis, mental health, economic issues and launch more podcasts. And we'll be able to hire more journalists, expand our coverage and raise our rates. We want to head into the new year with more truth to power and more critical coverage. We have ambitious plans for 2021 and your support is critical to ensure we can continue to cover what matters most. I know you're getting a lot of year-end asks today, but we are just 240 members away from reaching our goal of 1250 members by the end of the year. Will you help us kick off 2021 strong? Join us by signing up today for as little as $2.20 a month (or a donation of any amount) today. With deep gratitude for being a DAME reader and wishing you a happy and healthy 2021, Jennifer Reitman Founder/Publisher |
