This Week In DAME

I woke up this morning to a palpable shift in tone as I scanned news headlines. It seems that American media is finally waking up to what most of us have known since November 2016: Democracy is on life support.

All week long the impeachment hearings have been nothing short of clarifying. A steady stream of lies and gaslighting from Trump's defense team and the Republican senators' betrayal of their oath of office on display for us all to witness.

But it also feels like a clarion call of sorts. Among those headlines, I see many of you channeling your outrage into action on social media—calling your senators, pledging to help get out the vote, amplifying Democratic candidates. And this gives me hope—and a lot of it.

Something that doesn't give me a lot of hope, however, is the ongoing assault by this administration on our free press. No doubt you saw the news of Secretary Pompeo's tirade against NPR's Mary Louise Kelly (and the subsequent praise from Trump "You did a good job on her").

Since the start of this administration, journalism has been under assault. But it's not just our government's treatment of the press that threatens our democracy, it's also the gender crisis in media. This disparity may seem subtle, but the gravity shouldn't be ignored.

When we stifle 51% of the voices in this country, we contribute to the erosion of Democracy. The urgency of women's reporting isn't just about fairness; it's about representation and ensuring that news narratives are reflective of our diverse electorate.

This is what DAME works every day to change. Our writers seek the overlooked and the underserved; in 2019, we examined the real cost of American debt; the social implications of prestige television; the politics of lies; the economic impact of shrinking access to healthcare, and much, much more.

As the first month of the new year comes to a close, I know 2020 is going to be a turning point in American history. Please help DAME tell that story as it unfolds by becoming a member today.  Help DAME keep telling YOUR story.
